There is no new black

The news this week has made me a bit sad. Not confused, not surprised, just sad.

Not a single thing that has been happening is new by any means but it’s never something that has hit me very hard. It’s one of those things that I grew up learning could be my reality.

The Talk when I grew up was learning that you may not be experiencing the world the same as most of the people around you. It was understanding that some will see you as lesser. Some of your teachers, your peers, your “friends”, and that boy you’ll have a crush on in the 9th grade will see you as lesser. That employer that you really hope will give you a call back and the very group of authority figures that are there to serve and protect you may see you as lesser.

This week it hit me that THAT is my reality. And it hurt. And I cried. I wasn’t confused, I wasn’t surprised, I was just sad thinking about the reality of myself, my family and my friends. Sad that no matter “how far we’ve come” I am going to have to have The Talk with my children.
